Award success for Steve

We are very proud that our Group electrical manager Steve Ujma has been presented with a special award as an outstanding apprentice mentor and champion.

The award, announced during National Apprenticeship Week, was presented by Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG). It reflects Steve’s commitment to this training as the foundation of a career as a qualified electrician.

Under Steve’s leadership more than 90% of our electrical apprenticeships are completed, with high levels of support to help the trainees succeed.

Every apprenticeship candidate is interviewed by Steve, who stays closely updated about their progress and ready to resolve any issues. Clear expectations and realistic goals are set for the apprentices and Steve also makes sure that they understand the additional rewards and responsibilities of working for a social housing provider.

When their apprenticeship ends, trainees progress onto individual development plans completed at their own pace, which the support of managers and mentors. Then, they are offered a second interview with Steve – this time for a permanent position as one of our qualified electricians.

“Steve supports and champions apprentices with remarkable results. He has created an environment of learning, and his own high standards inspire our apprentices to strive for excellence in their performance and professional growth,” says Head of People, Karlene Harwood. “We are really pleased that his commitment to apprenticeships has been recognised in this way.”
